Siempelkamp receives the order for a 50,000 t press from China

The new 50,000 t press will be the centerpiece of a new forging mill for Nanshan Aluminum.

The Chinese Nanshan Group commissioned Siempelkamp with the design, construction, and installation of a 50,000 t (55,116 US tons) closed-die forging press in December 2012. This press will be the centerpiece of a newly designed forging mill on a green-field site.

The Nanshan Aluminum company is part of the Nanshan Group and located in Longkou in the Shandong Province. The company which was founded in 1978 has become one of China’s best known aluminum processors. Next to aluminum rolling mills, the company primarily operates extrusion presses for the production of aluminum profiles. Currently, Nanshan is investing in the production of forged parts made of aluminum and titanium alloys used in the Chinese aircraft industry and is building a new forging mill on a green-field site.

Siempelkamp Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH & Co. KG received the order for the largest of all the closed-die forging presses that will be installed inside the new factory, a 50,000 t closed-die forging press.

Siempelkamp convinces with competence in every aspect

The deciding factor for winning this contract was Siempelkamp’s unique concept for this large metal forming press: Siempelkamp will supply the complete press from a single source. This includes the design, the casting and machining processes of the component parts as well as their installation and the startup of the press on site. Siempelkamp is the only manufacturer of presses of this magnitude in the world which can offer customers this scope of supply.

Siempelkamp also scores in regards to the materials used for the press: The heavy parts for the press, with piece weights of up to 300 t (331 US tons), will be made of ductile graphite iron. They will be cast in Siempelkamp’s own foundry and afterwards machined in Siempelkamp’s machine factory, both located on the company“s premises in Krefeld.

The technical data of the 50,000 t press clearly illustrate the challenges:

Due to the large dimension of the 4 x 7 m (13 x 23 ft) press table and the customer“s request for easier accessibility to the working area, the clearance between the columns amounts to 5 x 3 m (16 x 10 ft). Eight cylinders are responsible for the movement of the moving beam. With an output of roughly 24 MW the energy-efficient oil-hydraulic drive, developed by Siempelkamp, applies a pressure of 420 bar.

The innovative strain rate control compensates high eccentric loads. It also allows extremely low forging speeds for the forming of very challenging geometries and materials used in the aerospace industry.

The press for Nanshan Aluminum is scheduled to start operation in early summer of 2015.
